Behavioral Economics and Health Economics Training Programs

TWO COURSES TO SUPPORT PUBLIC HEALTH DECISION MAKING

In collaboration with California Department of Public Health, our team is offering two separate training courses to support public health decision making:

Health Economics for Public Health

This course offers an introduction to the practical applications of health economics to decision making in public health agencies. By the end of th ecourse, you will be able to:

  • Understand how health economics can be used to enhance public health;
  • Understand what is meant by ‘resource-based costing ’and how to apply it to work done in public health agencies,
  • Understand ways to measure the benefits from programs that can be used in economic studies such as cost effectiveness and return on investment analysis,
  • Understand how to read and interpret cost effectiveness on public health,Understand what is meant by a ‘return on investment analysis’ in public health,
  • Be familiar with the ways that health economic information can be used to make decisions and identify how priority areas for public health interventions.
  • Be connected with a network of people who are interested in using health economics to inform decision making in public health agencies.

No prior knowledge of economics or health economics is necessary. The course will be aimed at those with an interest in understanding the applications of health economics to public health agencies.

Behavioral Economics for Public Health

Behavioral economics as a science and its applications to public policy and practice are expanding rapidly around the world. This field draws on economics, psychology, neuroscience, and other social sciences to understand the drivers of human behavior and apply those insights to motivating adaptive decisions. By the end of the course, you will be able to

  • Understand and appreciate the opportunities to use behavioral economics principles and approaches to improve decision making in public health
  • Have the background needed to engage with behavioral economics experts in policy and intervention development, evaluation, and implementation.
  • Identify new ways to develop behaviorally informed decision strategies for promoting effective decision making within public health organizations
  • Be connected with a network of people who are interested in contributing to behaviorally informed policy and intervention initiatives.

This course will be of particular interest to staff interested in learning how to apply behavioral economics to the development and evaluation of behavior change policies and interventions. In addition, it will be of interest to staff interested in understanding how to improve collaborative decision-making within an organization.

Certificates in Health Economics and Behavioral Economics: Fundamental Awareness

The course is designed for people who want to have a Fundamental Awareness of behavioral and/or health economics. The training will be offered online and can be completed at your own pace. Each course will have four modules. At the conclusion of each of four module, there will be a quiz that you must successfully complete. Completion of all four modules is necessary to gain a certificate at the Fundamental Awareness Level.

Time required: Approximately 1 to 2 hours each week for 4 weeks; 4 to 8 hours in total.
